We are thrilled that Cornellians are working on Black Reproductive Justice, but we are afraid they are neglecting an important health disparity.
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, in 2020, the latest date for which data are available, Blacks received 39% of abortions, Whites received 33% of abortions, Hispanics received 21% of abortions, and Others, including Asian (Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, or other Asian), Pacific Islander (Native Hawaiian, Guamanian or Chamorro, Samoan, or other Pacific Islander), other races, and multiple races, received 7% of abortions. Given that the US population in 2020 was 75.5% White, 13.6% Black and African American, 19.1% Hispanic, and 10.9% Others, according to the 2020 U.S. Census, this is an egregious disparity in healthcare.
Given that Whites are more likely to be Republicans and Blacks and Hispanics are more likely to be Democrats according to the Pew Research Center, we at the Babbling Bear suggest that to obtain Black Reproductive Justice, the time limit on legal late term abortions should be extended so that they can be performed on Whites up until the time when they register to be Democrats.
