In his essay Of Experience, Michel de Montaigne wrote, “There is no desire more natural than that of knowledge. We try all ways that can lead us to it; where reason is wanting, we therein employ experience, which is a means much more weak and cheap; but truth is so great a thing that we ought not to distain any mediation that will guide us to it.”

But what does one do when White Supremacist groups such as Legal Insurrection, the Cornell Free Speech Alliance, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, The College Fix, and Fox News present misinformation and disinformation that does not support our antiracist social justice agenda—especially now when there is blowback to our cancel culture techniques?

Presciently, Montaigne offered a solution to the problem: ignorance and incuriosity. He wrote, “Oh, what a soft, easy, and wholesome pillow is ignorance and incuriosity, whereon to repose a well-ordered head!” Such ignorance and incuriosity is facilitated by having a philosophical pillow.
