The Seven Words You Must Say at Cornell

By Carley George

Seven is the number of completion. Newton divided white [sic] light into seven colors. Mendel developed his laws of heredity using seven traits. George Carlin categorized seven words that you can’t say on TV. Currently we only have only six must-say sacred words to describe our moral selves at Cornell: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, Intersectional, and Sustainable. Clearly we need one more must-say sacred word to bring us to completion. The Babbling Bear is asking its readers to suggest one last word to be included along with the existing six words. The last word will go on every Cornell University webpage along with the sacred six.

Homework: write a single sentence using all the sacred words. “Sustainable,” having been used at Cornell for decades, is optional. Its novelty and impact has been worn out.

This reminds me of a joke: put defeat, deduct, defense, and detail in a sentence.

    “Excellence” or “accessibility”
Excellence slapped on anything usually means it’s garbage. “Inclusive excellence” is really exclusionary. And accessibility allows the DEI folks to assume everyone is disabled, and make courses so easy that all get college degrees, leading to ‘grade equity.’
