Racism Exposed: White Toilets are Signs of Whiteness

The title almost says it all.

But if you need more:

White urinals and sinks are also signs of whiteness.

These American Standard structures of privilege must be analyzed through the lens of critical race theory. As Ingrid Halland wrote,

Whiteness is one of today’s key societal and political concerns. Within and beyond academia worldwide, actions of revolt and regret seek to cope with our racial past. In the pivotal works in whiteness studies within art and architecture history, whiteness is understood as cultural and visual structures of privilege.

Critical race theory gives new insights into how racial practices and colonial structures continue to be important parts of the power relations. We must check our privilege at the door and ask just how was it that white was established as a superior color of toilets, sinks, and urinals? Why should whites have toilets, sinks, and urinals that look like them?

The color white, in particular the white porcelain found in public restrooms, is a sign of white supremacy. White toilets are signs of whiteness, and public restrooms are racist hellholes for already marginalized People of Color.

Let’s be honest. President Biden, the guy who let “bad dude” Corn Pop know who’s boss, lives in the White House. Could the systemic racism be any more obvious? Don’t try to whitewash this reality. “Vanna White,” really people?

The upright orientation of the seats looks like a salute…perhaps they are saying Heil Shitler.
