Power and Privilege

OK, it happened again. I am at my parent’s house for winter break and I picked up one of those top of the toilet tank-sized books. It was called The Secular Creed by Rebecca McLaughlin. Besides the fact that the book is not secular at all, it really opened my eyes. Turning to page 71, I read,

Leadership… isn’t about power and privilege. It’s about service and sacrifice.

That rings true.

The diversity, equity, and inclusion mantra I hear all day long back at school has nothing to do with service and sacrifice. It is all about reversing who has power and privilege.

Service and sacrifice are two things that my parents as leaders of our family demonstrate all the time. Service and sacrifice are the two things they taught me to do when I became a leader.

I am having an existential crisis here. Who are are role models and what are they teaching us?

Help!
